Generation 1
1.
Thomas Chapman-1
Thomas
Chapman was born in London England and baptized on 3 May 1590 at St. Mary’s of Woolchurch in London. His father is listed as
Thomas Chapman of St. Mary’s. Thomas married Anne Hardinge on 6 Oct 1610 at St. Mary’s of
Woolnoth in London. It should be noted that both St. Mary’s of Woolchurch and St. Mary’s of
Woolnoth were twin congregations.
In
August of 1611, Thomas arrived in Jamestown with his brother Francis as part of
the second charter of the Virginia Company of London. Thomas sailed aboard the Tryall
of London, and Francis sailed aboard the Star. Jamestown
was by no means a successful venture at this point. As many as 9 of 10 people
coming to Jamestown before Thomas and Francis arrived had either died or
returned to England. Jamestown was first successful English settled in America.
When the Company first arrived they made little preparation for the long
winters and failed to grow or store enough provisions. This oversight continued
through the summer of 1610 when the colony finally gave up. Between the
starvations and the Indian attacks hundreds of settlers died. In June of 1610
the remaining settlers loaded onboard ships to sail for England. They were met
by Lord De La War and convinced to return for another try.
Thomas
appears to have been a solider serving as part of Sir Thomas Dale’s
1611 attempt to setup a new settlement at the head of the James River. This new
settlement was named Henricus. In Henricus, Dale allowed the settlers to farm
about three acres of land each. This is where John Rolfe
first attempted to grow tobacco and married Pocahontas.
Rolfe returned to London in 1616 with his bride showing her his home, and
showing London the Indian princess. Rolfe returned to Virginia in 1617 aboard
the ship George. Unfortunately Pocahontas died onboard the George while waiting
to sail in Gravesend, England. But fortunately for Thomas his wife Anne
also sailed aboard the George.
After
Dale’s departure from Virginia, Captain Robert Smallay assumed command of the
Henricus settlement. Many of the settlers, including Thomas Chapman, moved to a
new settlement called Bermuda Hundred. While
at Bermuda Hundred, Smalley prepared a will in 1617 granting Thomas 50 pounds of Tobacco. The
Smallay also states that Thomas owed Smallay 400 pounds of tobacco (Virginia
Magazine of History 12: 175). From this it can be assumed that Thomas was
growing tobacco on his own. After Smallay’s death, Thomas joined up with
Captain Samuel Jordan and moved to a new plantation called Jordan’s Journey
in 1619. Jordan’s Journey had a fort and several houses located on the
plantation. Thomas and Ann moved into one of these Houses.
In
1622 the Powhatan Indians under Opechancanough
attacked the plantations along the James River, killing 347, including almost
everyone at Berkeley Plantation, just across the river from Jordan's
Journey, where most survived (Berry, Brian J. L. Ph.D., “Generations 1-5 of the
Family and Descendants of Thomas Chapman of Jordan’s Journey, Virginia.”
3/30/98).
After
the attack, the Company required a muster of all inhabitants be taken. The 16
Feb. 1623 Muster Roll of Families living and dead at Jordan's Journey, taken to
see who had survived and who had perished reported. The muster shows Thomas
Chapman, ux Chapman, infas Chapman.
Later
in 1624 the Company was dissolved and the Colony fell under Crown rule. The
Virginia Assembly enacted a tax of 10 lbs. of tobacco on every male over 16
years of age. Another muster was completed and found that:
Thomas
Chapman arrived in the Tryall, 1610(1611), in August. Ann, his wife, came on
the George, 1617, in May. Thomas, son, aged 2 years Ann, daughter, aged six
weeks. Provisions: corne (grain), 5 bushels; fish, 1/2 hundred; Arms and
municians: powder 1 lb. Lead 10 lb. peeces 1. amour l. cattell and Poultrie :
meat cattell 1. poultrie 14. Houses: house, 1. (The Muster of Thomas Chapman,
Jordan's Journey at Charles Cittie, 23 Jan. 1624/5).
While
many settlers in Virginia routinely starved, it is apparent that Thomas and
Anne were well provisioned.
In
1626 the assembly gave a patent of 100 acres of land to all persons who have
arrived in Virginia prior to 1619, and 50 acres for all others after 1619.
Thomas Chapman was granted 100 acres of land by patent "on ye south side
of ye Maine River against Elizabeth Citie," This land was located in what
is now Norfolk, Virginia.
Thomas
and Anne Hardinge were married on 6
Oct 1610 in St Mary’s Woolnoth, London. Anne was the daughter of _________ Hardinge of Epping, Essex,
England. She was born ca 1590 in England. She died ca 1635 in
Virginia. Thomas
Chapman and Anne had two children: Thomas who born in 1622; and Anne in
December of 1623. Both Thomas and Anne were born in Jordan’s Journey,
Virginia.
2. i. Thomas Chapman. He was born 1621 in
Jordan's Journey, Charles City County, Virginia. He died 1652 in York County,
Virginia.
ii. Anne Chapman. She was born Dec 1623 in
Jordan’s Journey, Charles City, Virginia. She married Edward Ryall. They
were married on 11 May 1644 in Maryland or Virginia.
After Anne died, Thomas married Joan,
the widow of Samuel Bennett. She was born 1585 in England and arrived
1622 in Virginia at the age of 40. She died 1639 in Poquoson, York, Virginia.
Samuel Bennett owned 450 acres of land at what is now know as Brown Point,
Poquoson, Virginia. This land became was the basis of a lawsuit between the
husband of Joan’s daughter, Hannah, and Thomas-2.
Thomas Chapman and Joan had no children.
Generation 2
2. Thomas Chapman-2 (Thomas Chapman-1).
Thomas Chapman of Poquoson, York,
Virginia was born in Jordan’s Journey about 1621/2. In 1642 he received a head
right grant for 50 acres on the River, between Elizabeth Cittie and York Co.
Thomas was still living in 1651 as he was a witness on a will. He died before
1657.
Thomas married Margaret Bray about 1641.
Margaret Bray is the daughter of John Bray. She was born 1621 in
Virginia. She died 1695 in York, Virginia.
In September
of 1644 a court record in York County, Virginia ordered Thomas to pay 240 lbs
tobacco to Abraham Turner. Another court record in 1645 in York County,
Virginia, orders Francis Wheeler to pay of 1046 lb tobacco at the house of
Thomas Chapman, within 5 days, to Joseph Hill, he being bound with said
Chapman. Also a grant of 1200 acres of land in 1645 in York County, Virginia to
Thomas Chapman, “having made sufficient proof in Court that there is due to him
for transportation of persons hereunder named. The Court orders certificate be
granted him.” Another land document shows on 10 Jun 1651 in North River,
Mockjack Bay, Virginia (Gloucester County Court, Ibid, p. 208. Paten book No. 2
p. 327). Thomas was also a “whitness on 19 Jan 1652 in York County, Virginia”
(Land document Robert Booth).
When Thomas’ father married Joan
(Bennett) he took possession of the Bennett Farm located in Poquoson. Soon afterward, Joan, and
later Thomas’ father died. Thomas than took possession of the 450 acres land.
Hannah Bennett, Joan’s daughter married Abraham Turner. Mr. Turner agreed to
pay Thomas 9000 lbs. of tobacco for the farm. After both Thomas and Mr. Turner
died, Margaret, Thomas’ wife, married William Booth. Also Hannah married
Humphrey Tompkins. Tompkins and Booth agreed that Tompkins would pay 4000 lbs.
of tobacco and Booth would release title of the land. This agreement was dated
5 August 1657. (York Colonial Abstracts, York Co. Virginia, 1648-1657 (1:
347)).
Margaret Bray was Thomas Chapman’s wife.
Assuming she was 19 when Thomas III was born places Margaret’s birth year about
1623. After Thomas II died, she married William Bouth (Booth).
Margaret Bray and William Booth were
married 12 August 1657 and had three children: Elizabeth Booth who died Between
13 Sep 1733 - 15 Sep 1735 in York Co, Virginia; Hope Booth who died 19 Jan
1685/86 in York Co, Virginia (William & Mary Quarterly Vol 2, p. 11); and
Landon C. Bell of Charles Parish York County, (Virginia History and Registers,
Library of Virginia, Richmond, VIRGINIA, 1932, 1984, 1996, page 204).

4. Thomas
Chapman-3 (Thomas Chapman-2, Thomas Chapman-1).
Thomas Chapman was born about 1641/2 in Virginia.
When he was 15 his father died. Thomas may have worked as a guide for Josiah Cole and Thomas Thurston in 1657. “Josiah Cole and
Thomas Thurston, who sailed from Bristol and reached that province towards the
close of the year 1657.1 They were engaged in religious labors until the
following summer, when they proceeded afoot to Maryland, and thence to New
England, being accompanied by Thomas Chapman, of Virginia” (New England Judged,
29, and Besse, II. 196, New England Judged, 29. 2 Bowden's History, I. 123).
The following excerpt is from
“New-England judged” by Bishop 1703.
“Being
thus clear of these other parts of the world, shall I cross the Main again to
America, and in an untrodden path by any English hitherto, as hath been heard
of, seek out death, and make my way some miles on foot from Virginia to New
England, through uncouth passages, Vast wildernesses, and uninhabited countries
for near two hundred miles together, and there finish your account? There I
shall find Thomas Thirstone, one of those whom you so barbarously used, and
Josiah Cole, of Winterburne, near Bristol, his companion, and Thomas Chapman,
of Virginia, traversing the said ground from Maryland to the Susquehannas, the
most warlike of those Indians, and receiving from them the most courteous
entertainment, not only in lodging and provisions, such as they had, but some
of them accompanying them, even to the Dutch Plantation close by you; and so
tender were they over them, that they not only sought out provisions, and
killed such deer as they could come at for them, but spared of their own
provisions to the said Thomas Thirstone on the way, when he was sick. after
which, being come to another Nation of the Indians, and Thomas Thirstone being
sick amongst them many days, and that near unto death, I shall find the Indians
very friendly to them all, and taking what care they could of him in all
things; and one of the Susquehannas, whom the rest left behind them, when
Thomas Thirstone lay so long sick, conducted them to the Dutch Plantation”.
Thomas was with Josiah Cole and Thomas
Thurston less than a year. after which Thomas went to work for Richard Pinner
who owned land next to Thomas Chapman I on the Elizabeth River. “10 Feb. 1662.
Richard Pinner demanded a subpoena for Archible Whahobb, Clement Theobals, John
Price and Thomas Chapman, in the case of Richard Pinner
vs. Edmond Lindsey, defendant. Richard Pinner of Elizabeth River,
Virginia. Edmond Lindsey of Port Tobacco, Md. Thomas Chapman swore that he was
hired in Virginia by Mr. Pinner to serve his time at Port Tobacco with Edmond
Lindsey. He also said he had served out his time and was living with William
Lee” (a merchant and trader of Port Tobacco). Thomas Chapman was adjudged to be
21 years old at the time. (Maryland Archives 53:317, 325).
It
is clear from above that Thomas Chapman worked for Richard Pinner until he was
twenty one years old and that Edmond Lindsey benefitted from that work. Thomas
was living in Port Tobacco, Maryland. William Lee had raised a regiment in
1659/60 to protect Port Tobacco from Indian attack. It is possible that Thomas
Chapman was part of that regiment. It should be noted that the Lee family of
Maryland as both wealthy and famous, many of them being colonial soldiers.

Maryland (John Parker and wife Anne, Indentured to Thomas). He died on 1 Jun

Nathaniel Chapman was a very wealthy man. He had
inherited the Mt. Aventine estate, what is now Chapman State Park, in Charles
County Maryland from his father. He grew of tobacco and acquired a considerable
fortune for that period. Besides his estate in Charles County, he also owned
extensive tracts of land in Stafford, Prince William, Fauquier and Fairfax
counties, Virginia.
This estate was kept in his family for many
generations. In addition to Mt. Aventine, Nathaniel purchased land in
Alexandria, Stafford County, and at the Thoroughfare Gap. He built in 1742 a
large flour mill that was named Chapman’s Mill (now also know as Beverley
Mill). The mill is located in a narrow gap between Bull Run and Pond Mountains.
Today it is a historical site that is open to the public. This mill, like the
Mt. Aventine estate, was held in the family for many generations.
Nathaniel was also a founding member of the Ohio
Company. He started out as its treasurer. The Ohio Company was largely
responsible for the westward movement into the interior of the continent. It
could also be said that this movement was a major cause of the French and
Indian War.
Nathaniel was friends with Augustine Washington, the
father of George Washington. In Augustine Washington’s will, proved May 6,
1743, he names his friend, Nathaniel Chapman as one of the executors. The
brother of George Washington, Lawrence Washington, upon his death in 1752 also
named as one of the executors of his will "Esteemed Friend” Nathaniel
Chapman.
Nathaniel Chapman died while on a business trip on
horseback while traveling between Washington and Baltimore. The records of
Fairfax County contain several references to his estate. On page 323 of book B we
find the "inventory of the goods and chattels of Mr. Nathaniel Chapman
Gent. late of Charles County, Maryland," which were in the county of
Prince William. By order of court, dated November 19, 1760, these goods etc. of
"Mr. Nathaniel Chapman deceased" were appraised at £669 16s. 6d.
